Apple update “Hi, speed!”

After last month's presentation in which Apple announced new iPads, last night it was time for new iPhones. But before these were presented, it was time for something else....

HomePod mini

Apple launched the new HomePod mini. The device is shaped like a small ball and features volume buttons on the top.

The top also features lighting that can change color. Backlit touch control, Apple calls it. HomePod mini offers support for several services. These include TuneIn, Amazon Music and Apple Music. Spotify is not (yet) supported.
Apple also introduced the new functionality Intercom. It allows you to send messages throughout your home. With your voice!

Handy for people who have several HomePods in the house. But in case there's only one Homepod in the house, it's good to know that other products are also supported. Messages also come in on your iPhone, iPad, CarPlay, AirPods and Apple Watch.

The HomePod mini will be available starting Nov. 16, 2020 in White and Space Gray. The device costs $99! Whether it will come to the Netherlands is not yet known.

iPhone 12

After the announcement of the HomePod mini, it was then finally time for the new iPhones, and the successor to the iPhone 11 was announced. This regular model in the iPhone lineup comes in 5 different colors, namely:

  • Blue
  • Green
  • Red
  • Silver
  • Space Gray

The look of the iPhone has been largely redone and is much like the iPad Pro. It has flat bezels, is 11% thinner and also 15% smaller than its predecessor, the iPhone 11. Also, all new iPhones feature an OLED screen (Super Retina XDR as Apple calls it). This new 6.1” screen in the iPhone 12 is two times sharper than the screen in the iPhone 11.

In addition to the external updates, all iPhone 12 models offer support for 5G bandwidth. This will allow faster Internet on your cell phone when your provider starts supporting 5G.

The iPhone 12 goes on sale starting at €909 (64GB) and will be available for pre-order at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. Delivery is from Friday, Oct. 23.

iPhone 12 mini

In addition to the regular iPhone 12, we can also expect a mini variant this year. The device is the smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G smartphone on the market.

In terms of specifications and design, the iPhone 12 mini and the regular iPhone 12 are similar. The only difference is the size. The mini features a 5.4” display, where the iPhone 12 thus features a 6.1” screen.

The iPhone 12 mini starts at $809 (64GB) and is available for pre-order Friday, Nov. 6.

Delivery is from Friday, Nov. 13.

iPhone 12 Pro (Max)

Obviously, the top model in the iPhone lineup has also been revamped and comes in a total of four colors this year:

  • Silver
  • Graphite
  • Gold
  • Blue

Also, the screen of the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) has also grown. The iPhone 12 Pro has grown from 5.8” (iPhone 11 Pro) to 6.1” and the iPhone 12 Pro Max has grown from 6.5” (iPhone 11 Pro Max) to 6.7”. Even though the screens have grown, the device itself is nearly the same size as its predecessor.

Both models have a triple-camera system that both feature Deep Fusion support. By the way, this support is not only limited to the rear camera system, but can also be found in the selfie camera.

What is remarkable about the camera system is that the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with more features. For example, telephoto zoom allows for 5X zooming. In addition, the wide-camera features a sensor that is 47% larger than on the Pro.

On all camera systems of the Pro models, it is possible to use HDR video recording. You have access to 10-bit HDR through this mode, allowing your images to show 60 times more color. In addition, it is the first smartphone that allows editing with Dolby Vision HDR. A very good way to maximize your 4K images in 60 frames per second.

The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $1,159 (128GB) and goes on sale Friday, Oct. 16.

Delivery from Friday, Oct. 23.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1,259 (128GB) and goes on sale Friday, Nov. 6.

Delivery from Friday, Nov. 13.

MagSafe

It is possible to charge your iPhone 12 with MagSafe. We previously knew this technology from the older MacBook models, but now it is coming to the iPhone as well. This makes it possible to charge your phone via a magnetic charger. The accessory that makes use of this technology is very similar to the Apple Watch charger.

Apple is also introducing the MagSafe dual-charger. This foldable charger allows you to charge your iPhone and your Apple Watch at the same time!

If we can help you further as an Analyst ICT I would be happy to help.

Why saving passwords in your browser is not a good idea
The blog post below was created in response to a question during our engineering meeting. Every two weeks, we get together with all of our technical staff to discuss the latest developments in technology or with clients. Good client questions also arise during these meetings, such as this one. Time to do some research. Thank you, Wiebe! You've probably experienced this: you log in to a website, and your browser asks if it should remember your password. Convenient, fast, and you don't have to remember anything. However, there's a risk involved. In practice, we see that many security incidents start with something small. Like saving passwords…

Apple is taking a big step with Apple Business
Apple announced something special this week. Not a new device, but something that might be even more interesting for many organizations: Apple Business. A completely new platform with which Apple brings all its business services together in one environment. And frankly: this is a development that we at Analyst ICT are following with great interest. The problem: fragmented tools and unnecessary complexity Many organizations working with Apple will recognize the problem: Multiple portals (Apple Business Manager, Business Essentials, Connect) Different tools for management, branding, and support Additional costs for basic functionalities such as device management This leads to a lack of clarity and costs time. And…
