iOS 26: A New Name, a New Era

IOS26

Apple recently unveiled iOS 26, and it's not just a regular update. With this release, Apple is forging a completely new path - literally and figuratively. The jump from iOS 18 to iOS 26 is not a typo, but a conscious decision that symbolizes a fundamental change in how we should understand Apple's mobile operating system.

From annual updates to a new paradigm

Apple says the era of annual, incremental updates is over, and iOS 26 marks the beginning of a new era in which the operating system is more closely aligned with visionOS - the OS of the Apple Vision Pro. By dramatically scaling up the version numbering, Apple wants to make it clear that iOS 26 is not just another upgrade, but a redefinition of the iPhone experience.

Liquid Glass: a visual revolution

One of the most striking changes is the new Liquid Glass design. The interface looks transparent, layered and responds dynamically to light and motion. Menu bars and buttons appear to float, creating a futuristic look very reminiscent of the Vision Pro interface. For ICT analysts, this represents a new approach to UI/UX design and accessibility.

Apple Intelligence: Apple-style AI

Called Apple Intelligence, iOS 26 introduces powerful AI features that largely run locally on the device - a clear nod to privacy-conscious users. Think real-time translations in conversations, a much smarter Siri that can now control external AI systems like ChatGPT, and visual summaries of content on your screen. Also new: Genmoji, which allows users to create their own emoji.

Innovations in standard apps

The Messages app gets social features such as polls and custom group backgrounds. The Phone app summarizes voicemail messages using AI. Safari, Camera and FaceTime are visually refreshed and more user-friendly than ever.

Gaming and CarPlay get an upgrade

The new Games app acts as a central platform for Apple Arcade and other games, including a Play Together feature that lets you see live what your friends are playing. CarPlay is simplified and safer, with minimal distractions. Apple Music gets AI features for translating song lyrics and pronunciation training - useful for those who want to communicate across language borders.

Availability

The first developer beta is already available. The public beta will follow in July, and the final version is expected in September, along with iPhone 17. Note that iPhones older than the iPhone 11, such as the XR and XS, will not get the update. We have meanwhile been using the developer version and are heavily impressed with what iOS 26 can do. What are quantum computers? And why is everyone suddenly talking about them?
Chances are you've been hearing more and more about quantum computers in recent months. In the news, on LinkedIn, or perhaps even during conversations about AI and cybersecurity. Especially now that a Dutch chip developer is gaining global attention with a new generation of quantum chips, the technology suddenly seems closer than ever. But what exactly is a quantum computer? And why is so much expected of it? From Ordinary Computer to Quantum Computer To understand quantum computers, it's helpful to first look at how a normal computer works. A traditional computer — like your laptop or server — works with bits. A…

With our feet in the mud
Here we are. Not quite recognizable anymore, thanks to AI trying to protect children. Understandable, of course. But believe us: these really are Berry and Frank. More than ten years apart, but in reality, we've always been brothers from another mother. And what do we have in common? A lot... and at the same time, almost nothing. Berry is often the good cop. Calm, down-to-earth, and always working to get things done. I'm usually the bad cop. Direct, critical, and always looking for ways to improve. But that combination is precisely what works. What completely unites us, though, is our love for...

MacAdmins Meeting: What's relevant for your organization?
Last week, we attended the MacAdmins Meeting in Leiden. It's a gathering focused on Apple administration, security, and innovation. What stood out? Developments are moving fast. But more importantly: they are becoming increasingly relevant for SMEs. We'd like to share the key insights with you. What's happening? And what does that mean for your organization? Running AI Locally: Control Over Data and Costs AI is now everywhere. But one question remains central: where does your data reside? A significant topic during the meeting was running AI models (LLMs) locally. Instead of relying on external cloud platforms, more and more...
