Unlocking your iPhone when wearing a mouthpiece

A major annoyance with the mandatory wearing of face ID is not being able to unlock your iPhone or iPad with Face ID. You're in the grocery store and you want to grab the app or list and then also pay with Apple Pay and then not be recognized by your iPhone. Fortunately, Apple has developed some features to solve this problem. Below I share how to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mouthpiece.

Unlock with your Apple Watch

Do you have an Apple Watch Series 3 or newer? Then you can unlock your iPhone with Face ID using your Apple Watch if you are wearing a mouthpiece or dark sunglasses and are not recognized. There are some requirements for this, though:

  • Your devices should have the latest software updates
  • The Apple Watch must be paired with your iPhone
  • On the iPhone and Apple Watch, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled
  • The Apple Watch must have an access code and carrier detection enabled
  • The Apple Watch must be on your wrist and unlocked

To activate this feature go to Settings > Face ID and access code on your iPhone and enable the feature Unlock with Apple Watch in next to the name of your Watch. Then, the feature works exactly the same as Face ID-without a mouthpiece. As you wear a paired and unlocked Watch, your identity can be confirmed

Unlock via ‘Use Face ID with mask

Fortunately, for those without an Apple watch, a new feature will soon arrive with the update to iOS 15.4. The feature ‘Use Face ID with mask’ works the same as the regular Face ID feature. The area around the eyes is compared to previously taken scans, allowing the iPhone to be unlocked. It does require some setup. You can do this via Settings >Face ID and access code. If you also wear glasses you go through additional steps to get an additional scan. If you wear several pairs of glasses then you have to go through a new scan for each type of glasses.

Face ID with mask unfortunately does not work in combination with a mask and sunglasses. This is because the feature uses your eyes to verify that it is you. In that case, you can only unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch or the passcode. The new feature works on the iPhone 12 and newer, unfortunately not on the iPad.

Face ID with mask we can expect soon when iOS 15.4 comes out. How it will work we will keep you posted.

Why saving passwords in your browser is not a good idea
The blog post below was created in response to a question during our engineering meeting. Every two weeks, we get together with all of our technical staff to discuss the latest developments in technology or with clients. Good client questions also arise during these meetings, such as this one. Time to do some research. Thank you, Wiebe! You've probably experienced this: you log in to a website, and your browser asks if it should remember your password. Convenient, fast, and you don't have to remember anything. However, there's a risk involved. In practice, we see that many security incidents start with something small. Like saving passwords…

Apple is taking a big step with Apple Business
Apple announced something special this week. Not a new device, but something that might be even more interesting for many organizations: Apple Business. A completely new platform with which Apple brings all its business services together in one environment. And frankly: this is a development that we at Analyst ICT are following with great interest. The problem: fragmented tools and unnecessary complexity Many organizations working with Apple will recognize the problem: Multiple portals (Apple Business Manager, Business Essentials, Connect) Different tools for management, branding, and support Additional costs for basic functionalities such as device management This leads to a lack of clarity and costs time. And…
